Hoppin' John-beans and rice
At the end of the year people all over the world performing food rituals to ensure good luck in the coming days. In Spain they eat grapes when the clock shows midnight - one for each chime - and predict whether the year of sweet or sour. In Austria on the table, marzipan pig, to celebrate wealth, progress and prosperity. The Germans are enjoying the carp and keep a few fish scales in their wallets for good luck. And for African-Americans in the southern United States is Hoppin' John - a dish symbolizes good luck and prosperity.
